Lesson Overview

This anatomy lesson allows students to observe, feel, photograph and dissect a real pig heart. The aim is to deepen understanding of heart chambers, valves, arteries and veins by combining hands-on dissection with Corinth 3D models and visualisations.

2
Resources Needed
  • Pig hearts (one per group)
  • Corinth 3D: Heart Section & Heart Section Animation
  • Textbook, BINAS reference book
  • Scalpels, dissection tools, gloves, trays
  • Mobile phones for photos & video
  • Computer & screen for 3D model
3
Timing & Lesson Procedure
  • 09:00 Distribute materials · Intro using Corinth 3D external heart.
  • 09:10 Show heart animation · Demonstrate valves · Explain how and where to cut.
  • 09:25 Begin dissection with teacher/assistant support.
  • During dissection:
    • Identify ventricles, atria, myocardium
    • Compare artery valves vs tricuspid valves
    • Draw and photograph the heart interior
  • 09:55–10:10 Clean-up · Final reflection and discussion.

3D Model – Heart Section

Use the Corinth 3D heart section to explore the internal structures before, during or after the dissection. Students can compare what they see in the model with the real heart in their hands.

If the model does not load, open directly:

3D Model – Heart Section Animation

The animated cross-section helps students understand how blood flows through the heart and how valves open and close. Use it to introduce the dissection or to summarise what they have observed.

6
Assessment
  • Drawings of the exterior and interior of the heart
  • Photo documentation from each group
  • Completed assignments and labels of structures
  • Student contributions during the final discussion

Teacher Notes

“Drawing makes you look at the world more closely. It helps you see what you're looking at more clearly.” – David Almond

Typical student reactions:

  • “I thought the inside would be much bigger.”
  • “The arteries are really tough.”
  • “The valves look very different from the textbook pictures.”

Colleagues report that the Corinth animated heart and section models make the anatomy much clearer than using static images alone – especially when students can compare 3D with the real heart.
